The Sandlot 2 (also known as The Sandlot 2: The Sandlot Continues and The Sandlot Kids 2 in some territories) is a 2005 American direct-to-video sports comedy film directed and narrated by David Mickey Evans. It is a direct-to-DVD sequel to The Sandlot, and was later followed by another sequel known as The Sandlot: Heading Home. It released to generally mixed-to-negative reviews, with many criticizing it for being the same as the original film.
Plot
The film begins with a flashback in 1962 where Benny becomes Benny "The Jet" Rodriguez. The movie moves to the year 1972, ten years after getting a baseball back from a vicious dog known as The Beast in 1962. A gang of baseball playing kids manage to get hold of a model NASA rocket belonging to one of their parents. When they accidentally shoot it into a nearby junkyard, they have to make a plan to get past a super-ferocious, mutated guard dog known as "The Great Fear".
Why It Sucks
- The main problem with the film is that the story is completely unoriginal throughout the entire film, making watching the film itself not have any point at all.
- The biggest problem with the film is that almost the entire thing is a rehash of the first film, making watching it, again, being no point at all. Almost all of the scenes are the exact same thing as the original, except that they no not have any of the same charm as the scenes from the original film and more so come off as annoying and boring to watch. For example, this film tells the story of the son of the Beast known as The Great Fear, with its origin story being told in the exact same way as The Beast's story was told in the original film, except that it is not as fun to watch due to the viewer knowing after the other scenes that copied the first film that it's coming, and makes watching the scene just not fun and more of a pain to watch.
- Almost all of the characters in the film are just completely unlikable and do not make the viewer want to care or root for them at all. Most of the characters in the beginning, both the boys and the girls, are sexist jerks who only care about the people who are the same gender as they are, and are incredibly discriminating to the opposite sex. Take the near beginning for instance, where the sandlot boys come over only to find that some girls have taken over their field, and one kid even responds along the lines of "Is it even legal for girls to play on a baseball diamond?" And even after this scene and the boys accept the girls to be part of their team, they are still unlikable characters and their generic traits just seem to show even more and make them uninteresting to follow.
- The scene where they attempted to retrieve a space shuttle, with a cat and getting attack, and unfured by "The Great Fear" dog is way horrifying that upset the viewers who like cats.
- Many of the scenes tries so hard to be funny, but it fails miserably.
- One huge problem with the jokes is that they had happened before in the original film, and make them not funny in the first place outside of an unfamiliar demographic. For example, one of the kids kisses the girl at the kissing booth in a similar way to Squints did to Wendy in the first film, except that this scene is just not funny as it was in the original due to the simple fact that the exact same circumstance happened before, and makes the scene a lot less funny and shocking that it is supposed to be, thus ruining the entire joke in the first place.
- Most of these scenes where they practicing baseball game is very dull, lazy and a step down from the first film.
- Pointless sequel baiting at the end.
- The movie was so bad that David Mickey Evans even said himself that he regrets making a sequel to The Sandlot and advices people to watch the original instead.
Redeeming Qualities
- The soundtrack that was composed by Laura Karpman is pretty decent.
- Compared to the other characters in this film, Smalls is actually likable and has at least somewhat of a good personality.
Reception
The Sandlot 2 generally received mixed-to-negative reviews from both critics and audiences. It currently holds a 40% critical score on review aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes based on 5 reviews, with no site consensus, as well as a 41% audience score from over 25,000 reviews[1]. On IMDb, the film has a user score of 4.5/10 based on over 5,200 user reviews[2]. The highest rated user review on the site called the film "A hateful experience", and "quite possibly the worst sequel ever made[3]."
